Starting Over in Unity

Hey folks!

Today I'm going over some of the steps in development- both in the Flash concept and moving forward into Unity.

Conceptually, the game will remain the same.  Limited color pallets and ultimately short, for now. I'll be adding in new gameplay elements that I wasn't able to add in Animate, like a small inventory system and some triggers.

The Flash version was done in under a week and was used as a final submission for one of my game design courses. The course itself was just an interactive animation class, but I went a little crazy. I've attached some of the original work to the post. One of the storyboard pages and images of some of the backgrounds. Everything for the backgrounds was done in Illustrator and imported into Adobe Animate. I ended up learning a lot more about layering and other possible effects in Illustrator, but with Flash being obsolete...the project is now just sitting as a conceptual piece. So onward to Unity.

I'll probably need to redo a lot of the assets. I'm going to try out Unity's new PSDImporter to hopefully make this process a little faster. I think I'm going to keep the vectored art but have it saved as PSD so it can be imported.

Before starting most of this, though, I'm setting up new storyboards, because there's a lot more to work with inside of Unity. I'm breaking down the scenes by asset in the storyboards and using those boards as a checklist for the assets. The new storyboards are based on the old ones, but there's more I can do in space in Unity. I no longer have to shrink rooms, I can expand them, so that's the plan. I have to create an entirely new set of artwork for things like the floor, which were not necessary inside of Animate. Unity has IK for 2D now, and I have a rough understanding of how it works, so I can hopefully try that out. I am by no means a coder, so everything that deals with that will require tutorials and a lot of time.

I'll hopefully be posting more devlogs/design logs as the project proceeds, so let me know if you have questions!
